Professor Willem Bemelman graduated as a surgeon in 1994, having trained at the Department of Surgery of the Academic Medical Hospital, University of Amsterdam and St. Lucas Hospital in Amsterdam. Following this, he then worked at the Department of Surgery at Leiden University Medical Centre, before returning to the Academic Medical Center (AMC), Amsterdam in 1999 to chair the Minimal Invasive Surgery Program. In 2006, Professor Bemelman was appointed to his current position as Professor in Surgery at AMC.
Professor Bemelman’s field of interest is the minimally invasive treatment of complex IBD, rectal cancer and complication surgery. He is a European Board of Surgical Qualification (EBSQ) certified colorectal surgeon (Bologna, 2005), secretary of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) and President of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP).
To date, Professor Bemelman has guided more than 35 PhD students and has published more than 480 peer-reviewed papers.
